How going zero waste also helped me become healthier

I started my zero waste journey thinking about all the plastic packaging I’ve thrown out my entire life and thinking about how those yogurt cups I ate as a 9 year old is still buried somewhere in a landfill in the exact same way it was when I tossed it out after eating it. Today we have recycling centers for harder plastics like that but then what about all the cookies and chocolates wrapped in silver colored plastic that I had for snacks in elementary school? Those are still in landfills or filling up the guts of marine life, then I remembered one of my classmates whose parents were both doctors I think, brought snacks of sliced apples or oranges in their reusable Tupperwares (although plastic but it’s reusable life is way better than one time use plastic packaging of all junk food). As an adult who now knows better, I carry snacks from home to eat during breaktime at work, I mostly bring my “baon” of whatever veggies I cooked and have some sliced pcs of apples or pears for snacks.

I recently was on a short trip with friends and one of them noticed how often I had to relieve myself in the washroom. Basically I have to go number 2 after every meal and also immediately when I wake up in the morning and also before I sleep. I attribute this healthy cycle to my plant based diet (although when traveling I allow myself to try dishes that I haven’t before so it might contain some meat but only those I’m not allergic to) and also predominantly whole foods.

Now I look back to the days when I’d eat snacks out of wrappers, back then I was always constipated, and compare that to how I eat today, I realized that a lot of unhealthy food comes in wasteful packaging. I didn’t go zero waste to eat healthier because a lot of healthy food could still come in a lot of packaging (apple slices packed in plastic from 711 for example) but eating a whole foods plant based diet does cut out a lot of processing and packaging so it’s easier on the planet and on our bodies as well! Namaste. 🙏

Note: It’s always better to buy the entire fruit from the palengke instead of the cut up ones from convenience stores.
