With the Corona Virus going around and Metro Manila going on lockdown, it feels like we are living in a Walking Dead/ Contagion world scenario. The panic in going out to buy toilet paper in the US just sounds funny to me, so it’s a good thing that here in the Philippines we have the “tabo”to wash our delicate behind but then Metro Manila also has water rotation so what to do?
They cancelled school earlier last week (March 10, 2020) and now they have extended it for another month. Since then the government has decided to cancel all flights in and out of Manila and have check points around the Metro Manila border. So for students who basically have one month of nothing to do I suggest taking this time to do a lot of learning as well as taking this opportunity to downsize or “clean your room”. I know that a lot of students wouldn’t even know what minimalism or downsizing means but I have more hope for Generation Z as I might just be setting the bar really high by having Greta Thunberg on my mind. Considering that she at her age has done more than what I have done at twice her age, she is someone good for Gen Z to look up to.
For us working people, we need not panic either. Most of us have everything we need at home if we know where things are so we can still apply the principles of minimalism and essentialism at this time when people are over stocking and panicking. It’s also worth noting that because we have been advised to stay home it might be a good time to go all out Marie Kondo with our homes. What better opportunity can we have that social distancing is needed in turn giving us a lot of free time to think about and clean our homes. We have been given a chance to step back from being sometimes unnecessarily busy and a chance to say no and do things that need to be done, whether it is to spend more time with family or pay attention to our often neglected homes.
Instead of feeling helpless let’s all do our best to make the most of the resources given to us. I’d suggest cooking some great food at home with family and get the kids into the kitchen to teach them how to prepare a meal. Everyone should know how to prepare a meal because people who have no idea how to cook? They will be the first to go when it comes to survival, I’m sorry. We do what we can to conserve the water we have and consume mindfully. Let’s all be responsible citizens and reduce contact as much as we can by staying home and not going on dates. They can wait.
