More than an alarm bell, COVID19

Since we went on lockdown I had time to think about how this virus has forced everyone to really drastically cut down on carbon emissions by cancelling all non-essential air, land, and sea travel to and from our island. Other places in Europe have done this as well. Operations like non-essentials are shut down, public transportation was suspended, people need to stay home and this means that no fossil fuel is being consumed at this time. The reality is that if we wanted to keep living on this earth we better listen to all the signs and signals being given to us. There is the extreme heat and cold happening at all times of the year no matter what season it may be as well as the extreme weather phenomenon from flash floods to massive forest fires that last for months. With all these things happening you don’t need a rocket scientist to explain to you that it is because of the way we live our lives right now.

Being at home, I got busy with watching my watch later list on Youtube and one of them stuck out. It was about COVID19 and how it is our present and will be our future as well. Basically this is not the first of it’s kind and things could get worse unless we do something to speed up certain processes and have certain systems and infrastructure, it’s all discussed in the link below where you can watch it. What I like to point out is the reason why zoonotic viruses like the COVID19 come in contact with humans, it was said in the video that due to human activities pushing wildlife into a smaller area there is an increasing amount of contact humans could have with them and that enables these unknown diseases to cross over from the animals to humans. We used to live in an environment where humans live in their communities and wildlife exist in their own communities each specie had their space and was able to live in symbiosis. Now due to animal agriculture and agriculture these spaces where wildlife lived are now being taken away from them.

I have yet to write about the insanity of sacrificing huge parts of rainforest just to be able to raise and feed cows to feed a beef greedy world population and all the other things that we don’t necessarily think about when we go through our motions in life, but one thing we all need to be aware about is that what we as a world community is doing will definitely be our demise. There is world hunger and yet parts of the world are sick and overfed. There is mass poverty and yet we deal with over consumption on a daily basis. We all have to wake up realize that this won’t work anymore, but until then we will keep seeing alarm bells like fires and floods and viruses forcing us to take a step back and let the earth heal.
