The Face Whitening Obession

Whitening creams are all the rage in Asia, every lady or woman wants to get that Caucasian white skin, unless you have a scar to even out, I say don’t waste your money on them. I get why ladies like being fairer especially in the Philippines and it’s largely due to the fact that the country has been colonized by mostly white folks (Spanish and American colonizers) and then some years by the Japanese. But what most people don’t know is that there are darker skinned Japanese, Spanish, and American people depending on where they live and what they do for a living just like people who have stayed in Metro Manila too long and who are working in an office as compared to those who work outdoors by the sea or on a farm.

I blame history books (mostly written by white men) and the previous generations for encouraging fairness and equating this to beauty. As a person who grew up in the Philippines and had family all over the country and the world, I’ve seen a lot of skin tones from the fairness of Manilenyos who don’t regularly swim in the sea or are afraid of the sun to the perfect tan of the Cebuanos who are blessed with being able to go to the beach on the weekends! Skin color to me is a result of how you live your life but I also know that some people are born darker than others but I don’t use it as a factor in determining if a person is beautiful or not. It’s just crazy that people spend money buying these things that could harm the skin by continuously bleaching or having the skin peel off which isn’t normal. I personally wear tanned skin like a badge of honor because it’s either a result of having run a race (10 or 21 or 32ks) or that I’ve just been to the beach and had snorkeling or diving activities both of which I absolutely love doing.

Instead of trying to achieve an unnatural skin color one that is not common to each individual, I would like to achieve the healthiest skin possible for me with as few blemishes as possible. First I’m not a dermatologist so ask your MD if you have serious skin conditions or your endocrinologist or OBGYN (for those with cystic acne it might be due to hormones or PCOS) that said I consider hydration. If I’m dehydrated my skin shows it.

Once you get healthy skin it doesn’t matter what color or tone it is because healthy skin glows no matter what! 🙏.
